Ziros is Crete in the raw, mountain people, hard working and very friendly. The main crops are grape vines and olive trees with wild goats and sheep roaming the mountain side. It is a working village with two supermarkets, a bakers, a butchers, a cake shop, a bank, two petrol stations and four tavernas. It is set on a plateau with lovely mountain views all round. Ziros is a large village with 473 people and good roads. This is a traditional Greek apartment in an old Greek village for those who would like to live in a non-tourist part of Crete, among Greek people. Although it is 25 minutes to the nearest beaches on the southern coast, this apartment offers real peace and quiet. There is a bus every day from the village to Sitia which leaves in the morning and comes back in the afternoon. It is a 40 min drive to Sitia and a 25 min drive to the coast at Xerokanbos and Makrigialos. Here there are a few tourist shops and tavernas and a large safe sandy beach with shallow water. The area around Ziros is rich in antiquities: although no excavations have yet been carried out, there are plenty of Roman and Minoan sites around. Geologically fascinating, the area is also dotted with caves. Sitia, the main town in the area, is an all year round town with a large harbour and Island boats calling in there.
